Rotorua (February 2004)

Rotorua is inside a vast caldeira of 15 km of diameter, formed 220 000 years ago, and looked down by a more recent dome, Mount Ngongotaha - back on the picture. It is famous as the sulfur city, with its unpleasant smell but also by its naturally hot wheated waters -offering very nice and relaxing spas.

Rotorua is perhaps the only city in the world where wandering in the Cental Park make you take a risk because the underground activity : on the 26 January  2001, phreatic explosions have pojected, during 10 to  à 15 minutes, stones, mud and hot water till 100 m high. fortunatunately, nobody has been wounded.
