This composit edifice 700 m high is active on in its North West area. Its most important and complex historic activity (attested from 1826) was in 1976 and 1982 ; its last big crisis in July 2000. It is monitered from 1987 ; the number of tourists makes this volcanoe to be particurly overlooked.

Quantities of sulfur allowed from the 19e century a small industry which stopped in 1914 after a  violent explosion destroying buildings and killingt some workmen.
